About the area

Living in Polson

Polson is the Lake County seat at the southern tip of Flathead Lake — 2024 estimated population 5,613, up about 9.6% since 2020. The town sits within the Flathead Indian Reservation (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes), with the Missions rising sharply to the east. Demographically distinct from the Flathead County towns: roughly 23% American Indian, 25% of residents are 65+, and median household income (~$53,000–$56,000) is the lowest of any nearby town. It’s a working town with deep agricultural and tribal roots — more rural and more culturally diverse than Bigfork or Whitefish.

The lifestyle anchors are the lake (south end — warmer water, swimming beaches), the Mission Mountains Wilderness, the Polson Bay Golf Course (27 holes), the National Bison Range at Moiese, and the annual Flathead Cherry Festival the last weekend of July. Providence St. Joseph Medical Center is a 22-bed critical-access hospital in town; Logan Health Kalispell handles tertiary care (~57 miles).

Polson is the second-most-affordable of the surrounding towns and posted some of the strongest appreciation in the region (~135% over the past decade). Late-2025: Zillow $563K, Movoto $625K. Entry-level in-town single-family $300K–$450K — the most genuine starter inventory in the area. Mid-tier with lake or mountain views $500K–$900K. Lakefront and Finley Point estates $1M–$5M+. The Polson School District tests below state averages in math and science but above in reading; factor that into family decisions.
