About the area
Living in Kalispell
Kalispell is the Flathead County seat and the largest city in Northwest Montana — population estimated at 31,296 in 2024, up nearly 25% since 2020 (the largest absolute population gain of any Montana city over that span). It’s the valley’s commercial spine: Costco, Target, the regional mall, the largest grocery selection, the main hospital (Logan Health Medical Center, Level II trauma, 354 beds, ~4,400 employees), Glacier Park International Airport, and Flathead Valley Community College all sit in or near the city.
Median age is younger than the resort towns at 36–38, with a more family-oriented profile (23% under 18). Median household income runs $63,000–$73,000 — below Whitefish but in line with Montana statewide. Downtown Kalispell has a historic district feel, with the Conrad Mansion (1895), the Hockaday Museum of Art, and the Northwest Montana History Museum, but the city is more workaday than scenic-tourist. It’s where the rest of the valley comes to do business.
For housing, Kalispell is the most affordable of the area towns and has the deepest market by volume. Late-2025/early-2026 medians ran $487K (Redfin), $537K (Zillow), and $610K (Movoto), with the highest variance reflecting how much new construction is closing in master plans like Kalispell North Town Center. Entry-level condos and townhomes start in the high $200Ks; mid-tier 3-bedroom homes run $450K–$700K; rural acreage west toward Smith Valley and homes around Foys Lake or Buffalo Hill push $800K–$2M+.
